Don Japanese Kitchen and Hi Tea

Don Japanese Kitchen is nestled in the heart of Austin's UT West Campus, making it the perfect spot for students looking for tasty, but affordable, meal. Don Japanese Kitchen offers a variety of donburi, or rice bowl, dishes, and originally started as food truck here in ATX.

While you're there, we also both highly recommend checking out the truck right next door, Hi Tea, for traditional, unique, or refreshing, bubble tea (though, you can get no pearls!).

Don Japanese Kitchen is casual in layout, with fun murals, and communal seating at long tables, or at the front counter. When you enter, you line up to place your order before going to pick it up at the back. They give out cards from a deck, rather than take your name or assign a number.

Pork Katsu Don

Tiff: The actual katsu was pretty delicious and they do give a good amount of meat. I wished though that they would include vegetables in their dons instead of having them as an add-in. The rice was cooked with a little too much water though. I would give this Don at 6.5/10. It's definitely good to go comfort food.

Pork Belly Don

Andie: I really enjoyed the sauce that it was cooked in, but the pork belly itself was a little disappointing. Some of the pieces were simply fat, throwing off the balance. I was hoping for pork belly similar to East Side Kings, so it was a little disappointing.

However, I wouldn't mind trying some of their other option! I'd probably add some vegetables, though. Also, those fries, those fries. They alone were worth the trip.

Hi Tea

I had the Peach and Melon Tea, and Tiff the Pomegranate and Strawberry Tea. The truck allows you to choose the levels of sweetness and ice, and since we were looking for something refreshing, we had normal ice and 0 for sweetness. I also had pearls. These are large teas, and will keep you going all afternoon! They are also super sweet, and when they made a mistake, gave us the mistaken tea split into two cups for free.
